This is a discussion on How much sun is needed? within the General Orchid Culture forums, part of the Orchid Culture category; I have some Vanda strap leaf type and I wonder if these Vanda should do ...
I have some Vanda strap leaf type and I wonder if these Vanda should do well in direct morning sun 7 to 11 am.
Other information says strap leaf should place in shaded area and I'm confused.
What culture is the best for these type of Vanda?
Thank you.

Thanks Bella. I live near to your province![]()
hi alvin and welcome!
well, just observe how your vandas are doing, if the roots/leaves are growing steadily, without turning yellow, then its a good spot and you may even increase the light level moderately.
im living in a hot spot and have to be more careful, but its manageable.
Thanks Ron, I will keep a vigilant eye on it![]()
I think your sun is just about right for a strap leaf.... although I do have some that are
exposed to full sun the whole day I wouldnt advice on it unless you want to have it
sunburned. Unfortunately my grow area is exposed to full sun, especially afternoon sun
so i just have to do with what i have.
Most strap-leaved vandas need some shade and morning sun to 11am would be OK. When I started growing orchid an experienced grower gave this advice ' Give as much sun as possible without burning ' - advice I have followed for more than 40 years for all my orchids except phalaenopsis, which need need quite heavy shading.
Thank you everybody for your advice. The only plants exposed to direct sunlight untill 11 am are Vandas and cattleyas, some other genus are in shaded bright area. Thank you everybody for sharing your experience
I'm pretty sure I will enjoy staying in this forum.
