That is really cool! I have never tried to grow sunflowers. I should probably try them. They are really nice.

Maybe the birds do not consider us dependable, think we are taking a long fall vacation or they are planning for a hard winter. These sunflowers have all been planted by the birds!! (It also shows how much rain we have been getting.) I am surprised by the variety since the seeds were all black oil sunflower. Some of the flower heads are huge. The big one upper right is 11" across. The tallest plant is 8'-4". All the blooms are facing directly due east.

I love sunflowers!! I was in Chicago on tuesday, and I saw a yellow finch sitting on a HUGE sunflower head just chillin and eating the seeds, it was SO cute!! I hadn't seen one in about 3 years; we don't get many yellow finches in NYC!![]()
Becky, did you stop by H's, going home with an arm full?
Tried growing sunflowers at my folks' place for several years. Finally threw in the towel. Without fail, every time a flowerhead would start maturing, a squirrel would nip it off. Got tired of seening the furry tree rats bounding across the lawn with sunflowers in their mouths.
They are magnificent!
I had a bunch starting around the bottom of my bird feeder and the landcapers took them out, but about three escaped and are tall now.
I never had luck with them when I had an outdoor garden, & I suspect it was critters eating the whole plant when it got to about 4" high. There was a possum in the neighborhood.
A bumper crop! They are beautiful. My neighbors have some about 8 feet tall. The squirrels are still busy with the peanuts my other neighbor feeds them and haven't found the flowers yet.
Thanks all for noticing the post. The squirrel is content with eating the seeds directly out of the feeder. The chipmunks can't climb the pole and are feeding from the ground. Sunflowers are sprouting all over the place.
