Default Chaubardia Heteroclita youngster and yellowing to black leaf tips

    Hello my fellow orchid lovers!

I purchased this Chaubardia Heteroclita (I think it's a young plant) online approximately six weeks ago. It came bare root and was somewhat "beat up". Some leaf tips had yellowing and black and one center leaf had a single black spot about 5-7mm across near the base of the leaf.

I potted this plant in moss in a 2 inch pot I waited a week or two and removed the black tips, applying cinnamon to the cuts.

I must say this little orchid has been growing steadily with new roots and new leaves arising. It seems to like to be moist and suited to the moss.

I'm concerned though that the discoloration and necrotic spots on the leaves are diseased. I haven't seen a return of the yellow and/or black areas so far...

Any ideas and suggestions what to do if I do see it again and what it could be?

If i were you, i would have sent it straight back to the seller with a letter stating the plant was not in a "sellable" condition on arrival. Then from there they may have sent you a better replacement with a "FRAGILE" sticker on the package. Anyway, thats what i would have done.

These spots, are they radiating out, i mean, are they getting larger? if they are, it is possibly a fungus or bacteria like Necrotising faciatus, The Human Flesh Eater fungus/bacteria. It will spread and wont stop untill the whole plant is succumbed. If it is this, cut off the leaf/leaves affected and dust the cuts with sulphur (not my ideal....) or Cinnamon. Then i would go through a prevention regime of Copper Oxychloride over 6 weeks, half strength and sprayed over foliage and the sphag moss. The Copper is an anti fungal/bacterial so that should give the plant time to recover and heal up nicely. Also if there is good root growth, spray with a foliage inducing fertilizer made for orchids, but while using copper, use again, at half strength, once a fortnight.

Hey, Catz...if it is doing well now just leave it alone and chalk it up to doing business online and be wary or using that vendor again.
Best to you and keep us informed! Remo
