That's a beautiful display. You said 'soil'. Are you growing these in soil or some kind of bark mix?

This is a discussion on yall want to talk about strange growing conditions...here's one for ya! within the Orchids of Other Genera IN BLOOM forums, part of the Orchid Photography category; cuz i get a lot of rescues off the streets i dont always have time ...
cuz i get a lot of rescues off the streets i dont always have time or space to deal with them... a couple of years ago i took to just popping them out of the platic pots and using the metal flower support, i would just nail them onto the surface soil of one of my more shaded planter boxes... they didnt seem to mind at all and have continued to flower almost nonstop, mostly phals but i got a pretty bid bulbo lobbii and a few others shoved up in there as well!

well, no, the planter box is filled with soil but i just popped the phals out of the platic pot and left them in the sphag still in the shape of the pot and just nailed them in place on top of the soil... i have an overhead sprinkler system that goes on every morning so they get the trickle down water from the plants above... they dont seem to mind resting above the soil... hell in one or two of them the roots from the tree growing in the planter has actually grown up from the soil and into the sphag so they are truly anchored in place!
Beautiful and unconventional!it. haha...
cheers,

You know, Shane, if we didn't like you so much and appreciate the gorgeous flowers you share with us, we'd just be so upset at how incredibly lucky you are with orchids. They fall out of the sky for you for free and prosper like crazy. Sure wish you could bottle up some of your magic!
Looks good ! As orchid roots are very adaptable they must have adapted to this medium as well. I know people who grow their phals straight in peat !
we're jeliouse with you to have a perfect condition for the orchid.luckily for them to come in your care.
I admire what you did here Shane. Not only did it work, but you have truly integrated the orchids into a garden setting without trying to hide plastic pots or trying to set up a artificial environment that 'looks' more natural. THIS IS MORE NATURAL! Way to go! AL
I am speechless!
Love it!!
