This is the plant which won me a ribbon ( not sure if it was 2nd or 3rd) in the appropriate class ( Masdevallia hybrids I guess) at the British Orchid Congress last week-end. Without false modesty I would not have called it that good, but Show judging is based on what is actually at the show - different standards fom those applied in award judging. But it is a nice big bold thing ; in a couple of hundred other plants arranged on my Society's stand, it held its flowers up well, to be seen , and they were at that time not staked , which makes them a bit more graceful and natural. I had to stake them in the greenhouse to keep them from being damaged.
Flowers are quite big - about 6 inches tip to toe. Bred by a guy in my Society who frankly admitted that he forgot what he had used - hence the French for orphan as the name we use.
What a dramatic magenta! Congrats, it is breathtaking.
I can see why it would win a prize...wow! Gorgeous!
Nice! And thanks for the clarification on the name choice...I wondered why such a lovely plant would be without family!
