Bulbophyllum (lilacinum x careyanum)

This is a first bloom seedling. I got a flask of them from Dr. Gerardus Staal, who made the cross. In their nonage, I traded a bunch of these little guys to various folks. This is the first to bloom of the ones I have left. So those of you who got one of these from me, this might be about what to expect.

Here's the whole plant. Pretty small, but not tiny, and not too much space between the bulbs.

Here's a close-up. Click for a larger version. Lips are mobile, blooms have a faint honeysuckle scent, maybe with just a hint of baby powder. Based on pics of the parent species, I am hoping that later bloomings will have longer spikes with more blooms. Overall, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out! I mean, it's got little pink fangs! What could be cuter than little pink fangs?

I like the pink fangs!!! Just the right amount of contrast between the niceness of pink and the meanness of fangs. Perfect in my book!!!

I don't have the patience or space to consider seedlings. Yet I know how wonderful it is to have a new plant bloom after a several year wait. Congrats! Those pink fangs could be gingivitis, and it would still be sweet!

So, I sent this picture to Dr. Staal. Apparently, I'm the first who he knows to have bloomed out the cross, and he kindly offered me the naming rights.

So my question for you, dear reader: what should we call this grex?

Here's my take on the naming thing...
This plant looks to me like it has fangs, like you said, so I think the name should reflect this...
How about Bulbo. Lestat, after the famous vampire?
Or prehaps Bulbo. H.G.Wells, After the author of " flowering of the strange orchid", a story about an orchid who lured its prey with an intoxicating scent, then drained thier blood as fertilizer....

Ya know...

I've taken another long look at the blooms. I think Masd's are more Vladish. These flowers remind me much more of a group (an oxymoron in nature) of predacious diving water beetles: Bulb. Dytiscidae.

Just letting you know that the decision has been made. I'm naming it for my friend Ellen. I had asked some offline friends for advice, and she jokingly suggested I name it for her, so I am. The hybrid name will include her last name, but I'm not putting it here so that it doesn't show up in a google search. She's getting married soon, and I plan on presenting the plant, and a printout of its rhs 'new hybrid name' listing to her as a gift, so I want it to be a surprise.

I was sorely tempted by "Bulb. Dytiscidae", which would be absolutely perfect, and is a great idea, but naming it for Ellen is just too much fun for me to pass on.

If any of you have one of these guys from trading with me in the past, just PM me and I'll tell you the full name.

Thanks to all of you for your help! I'll be keeping some of these grex names in mind for when I have the opportunity to name my own hybrid. Especially "Hurt Your Dog" and "Mem. H.G. Wells," both great ideas.
