    Default Paph venustum primary hybrids

Two species I always used to confuse are Paph sukhakulii and Paph wardii. There are differences, but both have small green and white dorsals, and wide petals heavily warted and hairy. I thought it would be fun to post a photo of each crossed with Paph venustum.

The taller of the two is Paph Double Deception (sukhakulii 'Emerald' x venustum alba 'Stripes'). The other is Paph Varuna (venustum 'Blatant' x wardii 'Green Aura').

Wardii generally has downward angled petals, but the venustum influence holds them horizontal in Varuna. You can see wardii's tiny spotting on the pouch, although it doesn't show up in this photo. Suk also has veining in the pouch similar to venustum, and Double Deception really shows it! I'm guessing that suk was the pod parent for DD and venustum was for Varuna, because I see a lot more venustum in Varuna, despite the strong veining in DD.

very nice! all three species in that group have gorgeous foliage too, with wardii and venustum having the classic "snakeskin".

Nice! I really like the venustum species. I wish ours here would grow up and bloom faster! Thanks for the info, McJulie.
