Is HCL legal over there? Heck!
Im no expert, but sometimes the seed can take ages to germinate. I have a sarc flask that is almost 2 years old.

thanks for the info, so far tried second time with the media, dun have a ph meter yet but i used some dipstick for urine test where they have a ph parameter, it gives a reading of 5 to 5.5 , these are qualitative measurements but hope it work.
now i just got to wait for the phalenopsis pulcherrima seed pod to mature. will post update.
NO intention of attempting this flasking, my garden is "exploding" with orchids and in addition this pod is infected with fungus (suspected) cause one end it turning wet, brown and yellow discoloration. the pod is only slightly above six months old so i hope that those seed inside would be viable and not infected as i skipped the seed sterilization part off.
but my main purpose of posting this is to share the DIY flasking chamber. this is what i do
1. 2 feet aquarium, cleaned then sprayed with diluted bleach 1:9, leave for 10 mins
2. put all the prepared flask with agar, knife, seed pod, towel, etc ...
3. take 2 sheets of newspaper, spray one side entire wet with the diluted bleach solution
4. cover the "top" of the aquarium (top of the aquarium facing you), using the weight of the aquarium to anchored the ventral part of the newspaper, the top, left and right of the newspaper is "stick" to the aquarium by wetting it with the diluted bleach solution. the last pic showing a close up on how the papers adhered to the aquarium after it is wet
5. now spray the outside part of the newspaper with the diluted bleach till it is wet, leave for 10 mins
6. wet your gloves with diluted bleach solution, gently and carefully make a small opening through the newspaper with each of your had. now both of the hands is in the chamber with the bleach laden newspaper acting as peripheral seal around your arm. then start sowing!!
i got minimal faith for this flasking, did not measure the pH, no seed sterilization and etc. perhaps too discourage by the infected seep pod. well. keeping my finger cross.
by the way, how early can we harvest the seed pods before they mature. i do came across some post in the net where they use green seed pods for flasking.
additional pics.....
also additional questions,
1. anyone had tried successfully with flasking without prior sterilizing the seed?
2. again anyone had used seed pods that are still green and successfully germinated them?
3. anyone knows usually how long does catasetums seed takes to germinate?
sorry so many questions....hehehehe

Therefore, from this composition sheet, young coconut water is like a natural steriod for plants :). If anyone is interested in the full paper regarding coconut water, PM me and I will send you a copy.

Anyways, I had my fun with preparing the medium and doing a green pod germination in a lab...here's the link....

thank you so much vincent!!! COOL
no wonder some even recommend spraying with diluted coconut water on orchids
Hi Ian,
1/ripe and opened pods with seeds exposed to the air need to be sterilise.
2/pods that had truned slightly yellowish brown, before it breaks open, it's time to harvest. The pods need to be clean off dead parts, scrub and cleaned with detergent. lastly dip in ethanol and burn to kill remaining minute living contaiminants. Inside the sterile chamber cut open the pods using a sterilised blade and introduced the seeds into the sterilised flasks. Any tools for cutting and picking seeds must be sterilsed ie dip in ethanol and burn. Transfer of seeds must be done in sterile chamber.
3/ i have no experience germinating catasetums yet.
thanks for the tips, so far i managed to sow them, it has been 89days post sowing. so far no sign of germination and also not contamination yet.
i just did the sterilization of the external seed pod and then did the sowing in a sterile chamber.
and in addition, i managed to find a website saying catasetum seed might take about 2 to 9 months to germinate. i am still keeping my finger cross. hopefully one day i would have the chance of posting the pic of the emerging green Gremlins :)
congrat for no contamination so far. Look good and hope to see germination soon.
