Default Trouble getting these Dendrobiums to bloom in Satellite Beach FL

    Hello everyone.
I need some help with these Dendrobiums.. I have had them for what seems like forever over 7 years and I have never seen them bloom once. I have Phals that bloom every year but these guys are going to be the death of me.

They hang under my eave facing east and water them weekly. They live there all year long. Should I move them? Are the getting too much sun? I just don't know what I'm doing wrong

Clearly they don't like something... Any info is greatly appreciated. It would be one of the greatest days of my like I think if I ever get to see these things bloom!

    Thanks!

Hi John! I'm in Port Orange. Your plants look nice and healthy. Do you fertilize them? I don't have any dendrobiums but my neighbor has one sitting on her porch in a pot facing south and its blooming away over there. I know it can be frustrating waiting for a bloom. Hopefully your patience will be rewarded soon. And I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me will pipe in soon.

Hi Sheryl, Thanks for your reply. I do fertilize with orchid plus 20-14-13... 3 out of 4 times I water them each month.

You say your neighbor's is blooming right now? I think part of the problem for me is not knowing what time of year these guys naturally want to bloom. Do they need a winter rest? Do they need a longer / bigger temperature difference than they get here? These are some of the questions I have been pondering.

If I had some Dendrobium plants that never had bloomed and I didn't know their ID I would have considered giving them a serious rest. That would include almost no water from about now until the end of February and no fertilizer. I would substitute watering with misting if the pseudobulbs started to shrivel. I think it would be good to allow them to experience low temperatures during this time but not below 40 deg F. I would still give them bright light during their rest.

    John,

I'd guess they're being overfed. Of course that depends upon how much of that 20% N fertilizer you use per gallon.

I'm using about 1/4 to 1/3 strength fertilizer. I may have been feeding them too far into the winter. Today I moved them into the florida room so they can't get any rain for the next few months. The glassed in room gets light from the E,S and W. I keep the windows open so there is plenty of airflow.

I'm considering putting them in a refrigerator (no colder than 40)at night to make sure they get a consistent cool down at night. Any thoughts on that?

Again, thanks for the suggestions... keep them coming. You all are much more knowledgeable than I on these guys and I thank you all!

I would just make sure that the night temperatures get significantly lower than in summer. Normally my friends in Florida put their Dendrobium plants (anosmum, lindleyi and similar) outside under some cover to protect from rain. They claim that there normally will be enough nights of temperatures around or below 60 deg to promote blooming.
I'm not so sure the low temperature in a fridge is necessary for your plants. (I do know a guy here in Maryland who always puts his Paph micranthum and armeniacum in the fridge during night for a month in winter.)

We do get nights below 60 after December. Hanging under the eve they could have been getting too much rain in the past. I've already brought them in so rain won't be an issue this year. I'll try to just keep them on the porch this winter and make sure they only get misted when showing signs of shrivel through February and hopefully I'll see some buds.

1/4 to 1/3 of what? Please don't say "the recommended amount", as we have no way of knowing what that is.

1/4 - 1/3 teaspoon per Gallon is what I use. Not sure that helps or not.
