Default 2nd last phal leaf turns yellow

    Hi All,

I have a phal where its 2nd last leaf turns yellow. As far as i know, phals dropping its oldest leaves are normal. But my phal's last leaves were fine but the 2nd last leaf is turning yellow. Regarding its health, it is growing roots, new leaf bigger than the previous one and also developing spike.

Any idea why? Is it due to insufficient nutrients due to its current rapid growth?

    Thanks.

    Hi KC,
It looks like the roots are a bit distressed on this phal. I would recommend a few steps here:
    1. Trim away the old spikes that have already bloomed.
    2. Unpot this phal and clean up the dead roots and remove all decomposed potting material from the root ball area.
    3. Repot in a bark mix (that allows the phal root to dry off after a day or so).

From the looks of the plant, I expect you will likely lose the three bottom leaves on this phal. Just a guess, but since the roots look distressed and the plant is putting energy into the spike, it is likely.

    Good luck with it!

    cheers,
    BD

Sure! I'm glad to help. Someone else may offer different advice, but that is the way I would handle that phal.

    cheers,
