Newly Deflasked babies - Can they be saved?

Hi All, I finally took the plunge and bought my first flask of orchids. They were deflasked Tuesday evening (all went well...I think) and they've been resting in their little trays for four days. HELP I think they're gonna die from mold! I was careful to keep them covered (and I misted them with very diluted physan) but it's about 100% humidity here and I think its too hot for them. What can I do to save them?

Hi , Air it out asap. they need fresh air. Grown in sterile medium closed is good but not when taken out and put in non sterile . I have a counter with Coryanthes seedlings on it there is a piece of plastic like a loose tent not touching them it holds some humidity but allows air flow . I would prop the lid up . Thanks Gin. I soaked the spaghnam in pyhsan.....should I replace the current spagh with new, sterilized?

Well done on taking another step in orchid growing... these little flasklings are so scary, luckily your plants looks to be in pretty good nick. The only thing I can add is to make sure there is some air movement so that you don't have stagnant air allowing mold and such to grow...

re the sphag - doesn't physan sterilises? I'm thinking leave em so the plants can start to settle in.

Thanks Bench........I've left them for now, but I brought them inside. This S. FL weather has been wet and hot (sounds like a porno flick...LOL) Anyway, their inside now in their little trays...hopefully it won't be too cold.

I'm in awe of you that try this stuff. Maybe someday I'll get the courage to try a greenhouse so I can try this flasking stuff.....looks like a challenge. Looks like fun....

I agree don't disturb them (redo), they look really good . The Physan treatment of the Spag . is enough . The tiny dark blips on the roots is left over flasking medium that has grown into the roots .. the replate mix is dark anyway mine is . Gin

Hi Connie,

Actually I skipped the "flasking" part and went right to the deflask. I would LOVE to have the set-up to flask my own, but not ready yet. I did send to pods off to be flasked last August, but they were duds. I have about 5 newly formed pods and am hoping I have better luck this time around.

Thanks for the advice! I brought them inside and they've dried out a little bit. Right now they're outside enjoying some shaded sun and a little breeze. It will be a miracle if I pull this off. The pic I posted of the babies only shows one tray...but I actually have FOUR trays of varied sizes. I'm going to try to post a pic of the cross to show you guys what they'll look like when they're all grown up.
