    Default Orchid Pots with Slits

    In response to: http://www.rv-orchidworks.com/orchid...its-sides.html

You can make your own and save some money. I spent about $8 at a box store and purchased an attachment I put on my drill to cut the slats into the pots. I got tired of the cheap ones found in most chain nurseries that have inadequate slits or sometimes simply 3 small hole. Not to mention pots will no holes are cheaper than the infamous "orchid pot" which they jack the price on because they don't realize there are some poor orchid growers (like myself!).

This also allows you to customize the pot for the plant. ie: need a lot of drainage cut more or wider slits. Need slow drainage cut fewer, etc.

I then bought a mount for my drill. This holds the drill on a work bench so it's like a cheap grinding wheel. It's a great (and safer) system.

    Good Luck,
    BC

What is the name of the attachment? I can get this for my husband as a present so he can customize orchid pots for me. That's a great idea. LOL

I'm sorry Liz, I don't know what it is called...... If you explain your task to an employee they will help, that's how I got it. I had to purchase 2 pieces. The first was a circular disk for cutting masonry and the second was like a special chuck (if that is the correct term) to hold the disk. The chuck then goes into a drill like any other chuck.

Both of these parts were between $4-8 each. It's also really nice to have a mounting bracket for the drill. This holds the drill onto a work bench and frees up both hands to hold the pot.

    Good Luck,

He is probably talking about a dremel bit.

I couldn't find a dremel bit that was big enough. So it's kind of a dremel bit for a drill.

I burn holes and slits into plastic pots, yogurt cups, etc. with a burnishing tool used to detail leather or wood. They are about $15.00 with multiple heads (mine has eight). When you alter your pots, be sure to do it outside because the burning plastic smells kind of funky!

And burning (melting) plastic produces a poisonous gas, so that
it is a good idea to go outside beyond the funky smell.
