a cyclamen

Supposedly a hardy type (considering it was sold in a big box store I treat that claim with some skepiticism), I picked it up as a bulb-in-a-bag since it had been marked down to $0.75. Cute little flowers though they are cutting out fast now.





Looks like some leaves are coming up. I'm curious to see how it fairs outside on my balconey this summer. I've tried the florist types before but the heat wipes those out.

Cyclamens are like gremlins!
They start out cute when in little pots. But soon spread and take over your country!

Cyclamens we get in our home improvement stores are hardy and shrug off our hot summers and cold winter. They just need plenty of water during the summer and some protection from cold drafts in winter.

What an interesting plant with lovely blooms. So, this one doesn't have leaves? What must it look like when not in bloom?

Paul, I didn't know Cyclamen had a hardy variety. I know mine are the standard thing hyou see almost everywhere. During the warm weather, I leave them outside and the insects do me a favor and pollenate the flowers and I just put the seed back in the pot and they just keep on going....as you can see from the pic, I think the white and red got mixed up so now I have pink. I do se that your flower looks very much different than mine.

Keep in mind, Howard, that while this one is supposedly hardy, the fact it cam from a BBS makes that claim suspect. My florist variety went completely dormant in our summer's heat and -- like Gin's -- never came back. So I salute you and your ability to avoid that problem.


Bruce, it looks like it is now forming leaves. Whether that is the normal sequence of events for this type or just due to horrible stress, I don't know.

If this survives, Howard, maybe we'll experiment and cross it with yours and see if we can get a hardier more colorful offspring.

Looking foreward to this experiment....but I'm not sure crossing a winter-hardy plant with a cultivar that I know absolutely is not is going to result in a hartier plant...maybe good color
