    Default Schomburgkia Spike

    My Schomburgkia Thomsoniana has just finished blooming. It has an enormous 7 foot spike. What do I do with the spike ie do I let it die and then cut it off ? Can I cut it off now ? Do I just leave it without doing anything?

    Wow do you have a picture of it ?I go by if it's brown cut it down . I think it reduces the chance of infections entering thru a fresh cut .

    Buzz - that is incredible! WOW! Do you have a photo of it in bloom - it must have been an amazing show!

    Regarding cutting it off: As Gin said, if the spike is brown, it is safe to cut it away. You can still cut off a green spike, but if you do, use some pruning seal (the black stuff). That will keep the cut from letting in infection, etc. We use the pruning seal on orchids when dividing them. Doesn't seem to bother them at all and is fast in a spray can.

    Again, that is amazing! Nice Growing!!
