    Default Orchids Native to Texas

I'm reading "Wild Orchids of Texas" by Joe Loggio and Ann Orto Loggio and it is a real eye-opener. I found eight species or variations that grow just in my own small county: Corallorhiza wisteriana, Epipactis gigantea, Hexalectrus nitida & spicata arizona & spicata spicata, Spiranthes cernua & lacerata-gracilis & magnicamporum...

Or: Spring Coral Root, Chatterbox Orchid, Glass Mountain Coral Root, Crested Coral Root, Nodding Ladies' Tresses, Southern Slender Ladies' Tresses, and Great Plains ladies Tresses.

One of my neighbors is joining a city wildierness-yard-garden-preservation group, and this is just so exiting! I hope we'll be able to go on some orchid-safaris!

Isn't that just too cool to find native orchids in your own 'back yard'? I've been wildflower hunting and photoing for many years. My husband Darwin is a convert and now you can't keep him out of the woods! He's got a great eye for spotting orchids and other wildflowers. We love to go orchid hunting.
We recently went on a native wildflower walk (actually more like a jungle safari!) with the local native plant society branch. The very knowledgeable (and slightly nutty!) guide showed us an area where cranefly orchid grows, but it was not blooming at this time. We saw lots of neat stuff and met some nice folks. It was a lot of fun! We are going on another hike with him the end of this month.
Be sure show us what you find in Texas!

I hope you will post photos when you find them, Denise.

    Default Another Good Book

One wouldn't normally associate Texas as a place for wild orchids but... there you go. It's such a big state... Here's another book I was told about on another site you may find interesting: "Field Guide to the Wild Orchids of Texas" (Paperback)
by PAUL MARTIN BROWN (Author), Stan Folsom (Illustrator)

    Great Post by the way.
