Liverpool has one of the oldest orchid collections in the UK. It was started by Willian Roscoe and has, for the past 25 years or so, been off show to the general public. The greenhouses were very old and deemed unsafe for visitors. However, this year Liverpool is the European Capital of Culture and part of the collection has been put on show at the various RHS events around the country. Another part is at Croxteth Hall, which is where I took these shots. Unfortunately many plants had lost their tags. Still a pleasure to see them after all these years.
Hey Steve, thanks for the peek at these beautiful 'chids.
Beautiful plants and flowers.
The greenhouse is also lovely.
Are they going to repair the greenhouses? or will they be moving the plants to new structures?
It would be such a shame to let such greenhouses fall into disrepair.
Great shots. I hope they will repair the greenhouses. It would be sad for them to just fall down around the orchids. Thanks for sharing these shots!
Cheers,
BD
Very beautiful! To bad the greenhouses are structurally struggling. Thanks for the inside scoop!
Steve, this is excellent! I've been hearing recently on internet radio (I listen to UK's radio 1) that Liverpool is the European Capital of Culture, and it is really cool that they decided to host an event that had to do with orchids!! I wish I could be there to see it, and see Liverpool as well...there is some fun stuff going on there this summer! Thanks for sharing
One of these days I must take a weekend break over there Lets hope the greenhouses buck the credit crunch! Nice photos by the way! I have the Beallara' just coming into flower again.
