If the canes are still green and the roots are white...no worries. If you have bad roots or if the canes are squishy and brown....you have a problem. IMHO

is there a way to tell the difference between flowers and leaves falling off due to a normal cycle verses there being a problem with the dend?

Hi, Nicki. I agree with Connie. Also, the oldest flowers typically fall first. The older drying flowers are toward the top of the photo. The healthy flowers retain their color.
Brown spots on the flower petals can mean botrytis.

I also agree.

ok so i think it's normal then. which is good to know.the flowers came off a while ago. then the stalk dried up and i trimmed it back to an inch. now the leaves on that one are turning yellow.
