Sea Shell Candle

I use to live in Ohio.I would come down to Florida with my best friend at least once ayear on vacation.Well,being from up north.While at the beach I would spend hours picking up sea shells.We would spend 3-4 days around Marco Island or Sanabel Island,just to be able to collect great shells.Once I went home with all these shells,what to do with them all.After a couple of attempts,this is what I came up with.After many friends wanted candles also.Would you believe I had to purchase shells to complete the requests.Now I have move to Florida,no more purchasing shells!! I still have two more requset to fofill.For some reason(chids) has slowed me down.Enjoy Rich

That is really nice I love the look when the candle is lit. What size jars do you use?

Thanks everyone.Cin it is the med.size crock w/lid UPC # 07644069349 made in the USA-OHIO I believe.The mega store has them for about $7.00 - 9.00. the insert is a normal size canning jar.The candle is a 3"x6" or 3"x4" Expoxied to the bottom.It helps to glue slightly off center.This helps when you have larger sized conch shells.This one I used a concrete paver joint stablizer on top of the sand.I made one of a friend,as a gift for x-mas.He tipped it over.What a mess,the loose sand ran like water.The shells were coated with a light coating of baby oil to bring out the colors.It took about 2 hours to fix his gift. No,I have not.I have shipped three candles from Ohio to Florida.That is why I started to put the sand stablizer into the sand so it wouldn't float around in the jar during shipping.It does darken the sand alittle bit.I have also though about leaving the sand out.But I think the sand makes it look much better.The shell in the inside next to the cannig jar are hust filler,that is where I placed the shells that weren't that good looking.All the pretty shells are facing the outside.I have two differnt sizes,that I have made.The small one has a major flaw though.The inside sleeve where the candle goes is way to thin.My friend in W.Palm broke the liner, getting a spent candle out of it.I have made about 12 lg. and 5 small ones already.I still only have the one. Unfortunately we only have very boring shells in Belgium, nothing really special.
I picked up shells on my different holidays, but definitely not enough to fill up a jar like this!

when I tried to pick shells in Vancouver they were nowhere as nice as those that I could buy.

This is so pretty!!! I can think of about 10 people I would buy them for....if you get bored (and figure out a way to ship them so they don't get messed up) put them on Orchidbids!! I bet if you used that clear gel stuff that you buy at craft stores to pour down in between the shells, that would work...and keep the sand from moving. I think you boil it to get it warm, pour it and then it hardens...and stays clear. Its good stuff!
