Hi BD,
I was wondering if there was a way to set up which page of a multi-page thread will re-appear after replying on a thread. Currently, the page that re-appears is the page with the first post of the thread, and i would prefer to end up back at the last posts of the thread... also, I'm noticing that if i just go back to the new post listing, the thread i was in still shows as unread... anyhoo... if it makes sense all and good, if not... ummm... well, let me know and i'll try and explain it again in proper good grammar english stuff

In your userCP, select >>Edit Options, scroll down to >>Thread Display Options. There, set your preference. Default is "Linear - Oldest First." This option show you the last post in the thread when you click on the "View Last Post icon" ( )in the last post column on the 'New Posts Page'. If you click on the thread title, you are directed to the first post in that thread. When you reply (quick reply, multi-quote reply, or reply) to the thread, you will be directed to your message (at the end of the thread) when the page loads. This is the default setting.
To keep from seeing posts in the NEW POSTS listing that you have already read, please do not use your browser's back button. Always load the NEW POSTS page by using the link in the navigation bar at the top of the page, or the "New Post" link at the bottom of the page, or by clicking the "New Posts" button in the OrchidTalk Toolbar. Because OrchidTalk's forum software uses cookies, you must have the current cookie in your browser's cache so that you will not be directed to posts you have already read. So, always load a new page and avoid the back button in your browser to keep your cookies current.
Below is some more information that might be useful. This information is found in our FAQs if anyone wants to read more.
I hope I answered your question. I *think* I understood what you were asking. If not, please ask again.

Thread Display OptionsCan I change the order of threads?Viewing New Posts or Today's Posts
You have a choice over how you view threads. When you're in a thread, look at the top bar. On the right hand side you'll see 'Display Mode'. Click on this and it lets you change how posts are ordered.
You have three choices:
Linear Mode - posts are displayed chronologically, usually from oldest to newest. Posts are shown in a flat mode so that many posts can be viewed simultaneously. It is possible to change the ordering by changing your preferences in the User CP
Threaded Mode - a tree is shown along with every post. This shows you the relationship each post has to the others. It's easy to see who responded to whom. Only one post is shown at a time. By clicking on a single post in the post tree, the page will show that post and all posts made in response to it.
Hybrid Mode - This is a mixture of the linear and threaded modes. The post tree is displayed as in the threaded mode, but many posts are shown at the same time as in the linear modes. How can I see the latest posts?Cheers,
There are two ways to quickly view recently created or updated threads.
If you are logged in, the 'today's posts' link (Found in the drop down menu under 'Quick Links') will show a list of all threads that have been created or updated in the last 24 hours.
Also, if you are logged in, clicking on the 'New Posts' link, will gives you a listing of all threads that have been created or updated since your last visit.
The administrator can also set up the forums so that each thread you read is marked in the database. If this option is set, then new threads (or threads with new posts) will not be marked as read until you have actually read them.
There is a built-in time limit to this, however, that will automatically mark all threads as 'read' after a set number of day, whether you really have read them or not. The default setting is 10 days, but the administrator could make this higher or lower.

Bruce,
This information is very helpful. Some of these things Tim asked about are ones I have encountered in the past and have sort of blundered my way through--for the most part to a successful conclusion. That said...
...There was one thing in your reply that caught my eye! What is the Orchid Talk Tool Bar? This is something I was totally unaware of. I wonder how I missed this. Is it like the Google toolbar that can be visible on your screen at any time, even if you are at other web sites? Is it something I can download, and if so, how? On a somewhat negative note does it put out information about me, making me vulnerable to spammers, or malware?
Cheers,
Rob
Hi Rob,
The OrchidTalk toolbar is like the google toolbar in that you can see it all the time at the top of your browser. It does NOT collect any information or send any information and does NOT make your computer vulnerable to spammers or malware. Check it out.
For Internet Explorer and Fire Fox Browsers - Be sure to download the correct version for the browser you use. OrchidTalk Toolbar (Please note that only active members in the community can access this page.)
Cheers,
BD
Thanks Bruce. Will arrange the thread display option differently and hopefully that will sort out what i was asking about.
cheers
