Schomburgkia lueddemaniana

Just got a fantastic large healthy schomburgkia lueddemaniana with my Christmas money and need some advice. It's about 16 inches tall, but I heard that these like to be mounted...is that possible? Any advice? Should I mount in wood basket or just keep in a large pot with lava rock? I live in Dallas so it would have to come inside during the winter. Any advice would be appreciated.

After seeing a photo of a mounted Cymbidium recently, I would think any orchid can be grown mounted if you have the inclination to do it, and to care for it. I hope someone with a lot more knowledge of growing orchids, mounted, will reply to your thread.

It might be more manageable in a pot. When a schromburgkia spikes and blooms the spike can be several feet in length. I think moving that monster might be difficult if it is not 'contained' lol. Looking forward to a photo. I have one schromburgkia (I think schroms have been renamed too btw...) that abro from the forum sent to me just out of flask. It is still small, but I am growing it in a pot in a bark and lava rock mix.

Here's a picture. This was just shipped to me and I'm really happy with the size and health of the plant. It's huge. (So tired of ordering plants and getting these teeny, tiny plants that struggle and don't bloom for four years!) This one has a new PB with a sheath that looks like it might even bloom. Maybe I could put it in a pot and then use a hanger on it.
Last summer a friend of mine found a rotting log which he set vertically in a tray of pebbles and water outside. He stuck the plant on top with no moss, just the roots dangling. It mounted itself and bloomed incredibly last month...I want to try that with a vanda or maybe this guy...

I have several Schombs both in baskets and mounted of palm trees. Both do well and grow quite rapidly, well except for the Undulata that I am pretty sure is gasping it's last breath. I fund that the baskets as opposed to pots offer a little more stability to these monsters especially if you are going to put them outside.

One is just bareroot in a basket with a couple of lava rocks for stability. Here are some pics of them. The first and third pic are a plant that I got at a yard sale 2 years ago and divided, the middle one is from Abro.

My gosh, they're beautiful. They are quite literally just tied to a tree! They must enjoy being dry in between watering. Do you water them daily? What specific one is the plant in the first picture?

The first and third are Schomb Brysiana (semi Alba) and the middle one is Tibicinis. They all have spikes starting. I actually could take the twine off of them now as they are firmly attached to the palms. I really don't do much to them give them a drink if it has been really dry and I am over that way with the hose. Feed them on rare occaisions and hardly ever treat them for bugs or mung. It is the easy way. I have made them covers if we are going to get a frost.
