Orchid Identification

I got this plant for my birthday last year, I have split it repotted 3 other plants off of it and it is growing great. No new flowers since I got it though :/ I must be doing something wrong, but before i can figure out what I am doing wrong I need to figure out what type it is. I know it's not a phal. but after that I have no clue! Please help.

After you split a plant, it will not flower the next cycle...sometimes for a couple flowering cycles. Don't quote me; but that looks like a cymbidium. Unless you own a greenhouse; you won't usually be able to get these to bloom until you have it pot-bound with maybe 3 or 4 growths. Before splitting most orchids, it's best to look up what kind it is and go by the repotting instructions. I used to over-split mine and now realize sometimes it's better to leave extra p-bulbs on a plant. They stay healthier and bloom better and more often. The plant looks great, you may get lucky and get flowers next spring....If you have any pictures of the flowers it will be alot easier to id this one.

Thats the problem, I wasn't smart enough to take pictures lol I kinda though maybe I should have left it alone when I repotted it because it grew 5 growths on it. I keep reading more and more on here and feel i shouldn't have done anything with it oh well you live you learn, NOw where do i buy a new phal from,

I too would think it is a Cymbidium and Connie is correct that it would have been better to have not divided it. You may wish to look up Cymbidium culture so you get the light correct to rebloom it. They also like a fall cool down. What area do you live in?

Hi Thomas, it's a Cymbidium. It looks healthy enough with the new growth coming through. Keep the water up to it... Cymbids love a good drink and also love a lot of fertiliser. Cymbids also like a fair amount of light (I grow mine with almost half a day's worth of sunlight mainly morning).

As far as blooming, if you get that new growth strong enough, it may just bloom come fall (autumn).... so u got six months to feed it lots, Seymour

HI guys, Thanks for the help! I am in North east nevada so it does get pretty hot in the summer and cold in the wnter so providing a cooldown in the fall won't be a problem. As far as light it gets a lot of filtered sunlight. it sits next to a windowon the same wall and also has a window in about 10 ft from it. no direct sunlight though, is that ok? also what do i feed it? I have some "orchid fertalizer" that i bought at the grocery store. how often do it feed it? Also, It has some black spots on the leaves. What are these? how do i get rid of them?

Hi Thomas,
Normally I would suggest keeping an orchid out of direct sun because I've seen lots of scorched leaves as a result. However, cymbidiums (and I agree with everyone else that it is a cymbidium, for sure) seem to handle that very well. Most people I know say that you really need to have them outside for the summer and fall (right up to freezing temperatures), then they will bloom in the winter. If they don't get that period of really bright light, followed by some cool temperatures, they won't bloom. The comments already made about keeping it well fertilized and watered are spot on, as are the ones about not dividing it too often. They seem to perform best when they are getting close to breaking their pot. Never mind, though, with good care, your plants should soon be filling its pot again. Hope you are rewarded with great blooms. Please post some photos when that day arrives!

well ladies and gentleman, I have aproblem now. my tips are all turning black and my plant is dying it looks like. it has 2 new growths on it but they seem to be taking all the energy from the plan. my leaves have black spots on them and one of the oldest leaves just truned brown and died. I water the same nothing has changed it has been in the same location since I got it . I don't know what is happening. going to try to get a good picture of it but I don't have a digital camera right now . Ideas?
