    Default Repotting in Semi-Hydro

I did it!! My s/h pellets arrived today, and I got right to work. The main concern was the compot, as there are some yellow leaves that have me a little worried. There were supposed to be nine plants in the pot, but it turned out there were ten, and several had more than one big, fat, wonderfully plump pseudobulb, so I hope they like their new home.

    Wilsonara Pacific Passage 'Rocket Burst'.

Compot containing what should have been nine plants, but turned out to be ten (although three are really tiny)

Beautiful root system, but oh that awful, soggy moss. Amazingly, there was no root rot.

One repotted in s/h (with a root growth stimulator added to the water)

And here are four repotted. I hope they do well.

I decided to plant the tiny ones in bark, and put three of them together, just to see how they do. It should be interesting to see how well they all do, and which way they seem happier.

I have one more to do, and that's my Phal, Baldan's Kaleidoscope. That's the one that was hit by mealies, but seems clear of them now. I've had it bare rooted for a couple of weeks, and she seems really content, but I want to see if she doesn't do even better in s/h, and I will be happy to be able to see her root system thru the pot, and know when to water.

    Keep your fingers crossed please!!

And here they are, happily back on their shelves.

That big one on the bottom shelf is not in Leca. It's in bark. I am using the pot as if it had leca in it though. Just keeping water to the level of the holes at the bottom. That's the one that flew off the shelf during the storm a few days ago, and I didn't want to let it sit with its bare roots hanging out too long. So far, so good. Trying to get the old medium out of the roots was next to impossible though, so now I'm leery to attempt the s/h with one or both of the others, as I'll never get that medium out completely. Unless someone here has any other ideas.

Hi Anne, How long did you soak the roots with bark stuck to them? Sometimes gently swishing the plants roots thru a pan of tepid water after they have soaked for a while will loosen the bark pieces enough that they can be pulled gently free of the roots. i don't know if it is a good idea to treat the bark filled pot as if it were leca filled. It may absorb too much water, or stay wet too long and not let the roots get enough oxygen. Watch that pot for rot.

I will watch it closely Cindi, thanks. So far, it seems pretty happy, and it's been a couple of days. I'm not going to water it too often, unless the reservoir looks dry, but I do mist all of my plants once a day (sometimes twice). It's pretty warm and humid in that room. The biggest problem with the old medium is that half the pot was filled with styrofoam peanuts, topped with bark, and it was all pretty well stuck way into the root system. I carefully pried out what I could, but decided to leave the rest for now, and just fill in with fresh bark.
