    Default Genus names?

Hey everybody, you all have Sue to thank for getting me on here. Anyway, what would the genus name be for a Wils. x Odontioda? Is it still a Wils., but with less oncid? I mean, I never understood why plants that are half odontoglossum, for example, are classifed in odontocidium with plants that may have had almost all the odontoglossum bred out of them generations ago. Any help?

Wilsonara is Cochlioda x Odontoglossum x Oncidium
    Odontioda is Cochlioda x Odontoglossum

If you cross the two, you should still get a Wilsonara, since the components of Odontioda are already included in Wilsonara.

It's like crossing a Blc to an Lc, the result is still a Blc.

Jason (or anyone...), how many times can you cross those in succession before the Oncidium portion is effectively "bred out?" Or will it ever be?

I don't have any experience in the oncidium tribe, so I have no idea how long until its characteristics are effectively diluted enough so as to be nonexistent or thorougly recessive. I suspect that depends on the species used, the particular clone used, the other parent, the particular seedling, the phase of the moon & stars, etc. But one shot of oncidium, no matter how distant, will still be reflected in the genus name of the progeny.

an example for all the phal growers--many of the dtps look identical to regular "straight phals", and the doritis influence has been all but obliterated.

I'm afraid I'm no help on the Oncidium question either. I think it would very much depend on the species regarding how dominant the characteristics might be.

So I would imagine that in the cross we are planning, Sue, that the odontoglossum would be rather more prominant just by percentage dominance if nothing else. Correct? I also hope that it turns out warmth tolerant, which it would seem will happen.

I would imagine so. I'll be getting that pollen in the mail to you on Monday – I didn't get to it yet.
