hi anne,
well, i would say its a root, also the spike should come out more between the leaves.

Looks like after losing all its blooms at one time (scared me bout half to death when she did that), I see a new growth on her. Probably a root? But could it be a keiki? There had been one of those before, that I made the mistake of removing. It's still hanging in, but not doing anything, including growing new roots (the keiki I mean).
So, as usual, I still sometimes have trouble deciding what type of growth I'm looking at. That white ring at the stem made me think root, but the rest of it sort of resembles the way I see new spikes starting out on other orchids (although they aren't Vanda types).
So, pardon my ignorance, but maybe someone here will be able to tell me what I'm seeing. I guess a very long root soak this morning sure didn't hurt, huh?
hi anne,
well, i would say its a root, also the spike should come out more between the leaves.
Thanks Ron. I agree that it's not a spike, since spikes on Vandas do come out from between the leaves. My first thought was root, but it seems so much thicker than other new roots I've seen on my vandas, that I thought maybe (but not optimistically), keiki, especially since I don't know what a newly forming keiki might look like. I tend to agree with you that's it's probably a root though.
Okay.......... so why don't new roots get us excited? Well, not exactly unexcited, because any new growth gets me excited; but not nearly as excited as something that might form another orchid, or a flower.
Yes, that is a root. Good growing!
Cheers,
BD
Anne, you have a new root growing and you should be happy because that means your vanda is happy and helathy. I am posting some pics for you: one and two are the new growth, #3 is the new roots and #4 is a spike. This is the vanda I thought was sick... She is doing good.
definitely a new root, im sure there'll be lots more of them. good growing.
Thanks y'all. I don't know why I should feel a little disappointed that it's not something more exciting, especially since this is the first new growth of any kind I've found on this wonderful orchid.
the wonderful thing about root growth is that your plant will still be able to support itself and it's general health is imrpoved... i would be very happy if half my Paphs would grow roots as fat as that!
