My dendrobiums form new canes off the bottom part, next to the roots. When I find keikei's on the tops of the canes I usually am killing the plant.

yes just wondering if it is normal on a dendrobium for a kiki to form at the bottom of the cane? and also the part that looks like new growth is comming from the bottom of the new cane from this year. its just a normal dendro. i keep it out side these days and do everything needed. but the top roots dry out pretty fast im thinking it is because the pot i have it in is to big. its about an 8 inch pot im guessing

I think its just new growth. Keiki's usually grow at the top or off of a spike.
a Dendrobe can pretty much send up a new growth from any nodes. If it is on the bottom, ie near where the roots are, then I would say that is just the normal new growth of the plant. If however it is up along the cane, then it is a keiki. Plants will keiki for a number of reason, either they are not happy, e.g the plant isn't getting enough light, or the plants got too much nitrogen during one of it's growth stage, or got too much water so initiated keiki rather than flower formation.
Now it's not all bad, if the nother plant is happy, then let the keiki grow and in a few months when it roots, you can separate it and then you will have another plant to share or trade with others. (just remember to put the same label on the little one as mommy)
