Default A new addition to the family - L. Santa Barbara Sunset

Okay gang. When you get a new orchid what do you do?
    1. Repot immediately.
    2. Put under grow lights, wait until you see new growth, then repot.
    3. Wait at least a year before you even consider re-potting the newbie.

I just bought a L. Santa Barbara Sunset "showtime" TIGHTLY packed into a pot and read on line that the roots of these plants desire quick drying....(and I'm a notorious over-waterer!)

For new plants, I normally repot, insect spray and set them aside.

If you feel comfortable with the plant source(grower) and the mix is still good, then you can wait, but spray them and set them aside for a week or so.

It is a beautiful hybrid and that clone is super nice. I believe this hybrid has L. anceps as one of the parents, so keeping it drier and cooler in late fall and winter.

    Tom,
I'd really like to mount it. It would let the roots hang and the flowers (from what I've seen) have long stems...

It should do well on mount if the condition is right. Your warm season is much longer, so you should have no problem to establish it before the winter.

Yes, the spike is very long. A specimen plant can put on a fantastic show.

Yeah, we don't get a freeze until November 15 usually! I just realized you're in Delaware...I went to the University of Delaware. Go Blue Hens and all that!

    Default repotting new orchids

I usually keep them where I can see them and notice any problems for a couple months and repot them when they need it. If they need it right away, then right away it is. I repot into semi-hydroponic pots and clay pellets. The only exception is when I plant seedlings after deflasking. They go into sphagnum.

    Tom,
By any chance, do you know what time of year this plant blooms?
