Careful what you say, Tim. You're speaking about his mother.

    Default Definition?

Julie, does "maudiae" really mean "mother?"

I tried doing a quick lookup but couldn't find it; "maud," however, was defined as "A gray plaid; -- used by shepherds in Scotland."

    ??

    Anyone know about this?

    Louis,

As far as I can figure, Maudiae is the Latinese for Maud, which is short for the German name Matilda. If Maud was your mother, than the shoe fits (or the slipper fits, as it were.) I was only commenting on the strong family resemblance.

    I see.

I've never been told I look like an orchid bloom before. Thanks!

There is also the word "maudlin" which according to the Oxford dictionary means self pitying or tearfully sentimental. According to that source it goes back to Bible times and the name Mary Magdalene or the French version of the name Madeleine.
Re the "gray plaid" I think it would only have been worn by the poorer people rather than those that had a clan tartan, so both meanings fit.
There was also an Empress Maud, who was named the legitimate heir to the English throne in the 11 hundred's. She never won the throne, as her cousin Stephen stole it!
Then there is "maundy money" which used to be distributed to the "worthy poor" by the English monarch on the Thursday before Easter. That says the origin is Latin "mandatum"
I think whoever chose the name "Maudie" for such a beautiful GREEN orchid was probably naming it after his mother in law!
