Buy orchids for their foliage?! Are you NUTS?!?!?
Yes, but only jewel orchids.
Not very often but once in a while I do.
Well, yes. Doesn't everybody?
Phalaenopsis schilleriana and stuartiana are good candidates!
Phal. Wiganiae, Phal. Hilo Lip, Phal. stuartiana.
Phal phillippensis, lindleyi are also beautiful.
I usually just buy them if they are in the 'needs extra love' section of the nursery. However, with my latest batch, I specifically looked for cool foliage since they spend 50 weeks of the year without flowers!
I bought a Paph delenatii, var Dunkel this spring just for the foliage. Who cares about the flower?
The British Paph Society had competitive classes at the show table at all their meetings, when I was a member, some years ago ; and one class was for best foliage. Some of the marbled or mottled leaves paphs are really wonderful. Flowers were considered a disadvantage in that class.
Oeceoclades spathulifera. Neat little terrestrial from Madagascar.
Very interesting pattern. Good one Chris
