Ever buy an orchid just for its foliage?

quite bland actually. The Ludisia blooms are just a spike of small, white blooms, that dont attract much attention. Google images is the place to look

With vanda types...I've bought plants unbloomed that have correct placement of the straps. Where the fan has perfect confirmation. You can spot one of these from across the room. In my opinion you have a really good chance of the blooms following suite.
I pick seedlings the same way. You have a table full of the same cross and I always go for the better conformation even if it is quite smaller.

When I want to add to my collection I always look for a different leaf type or growth habit. Let's face it, when Catts and Phals aren't in bloom, they don't have much to offer.

I definitely bought this one just for the leaves: Maxillaria pseudoreichenheimiana, with silvery leaf spots that look as if they're painted on to the leaf surface.

i have tried jewel orchids, but there is an insect pest here that just destroys them. there are orchids i avoid due to their appearance (foliage) moreso than buying some for their leaves, but an attractive plant is an overall plus. i have a lot of other colorful houseplants and outdoor plants, so there is no lack of color and interest in my garden. the orchids don't have to carry that all by themselves.
