I've bought several plants by the foliage. If the plant is pleasing form wise and suitable for me to grow, my den spectabile(sp) the, best example ,I get a lot of complements when it is not in bloom, my coconut orchid also.

How did I get on an old poll? This poll was on my reader and I replied to it and now I'm reading the thread and have realized, I pulled up this old thread! Sorry! Be that as it may, I buy orchids based on flower production, easy care, and ability to survive in Fort Wayne, Indiana. But I buy Neofinetia falcata based on foliage. Neofinetia have pretty much the same flower--with some exceptions, like the much desired Neof. falcata MANJUSHAGE 曼珠沙華. This plant has three nectar spurs. Because of its progeny, it can only be called a MANJUSHAGE 曼珠沙華, once it's bloom is verified. Why is that so important? A verified MANJUSHAGE 曼珠沙華, costs at least US$100, but anything less than three spurs and its value decreases by half! So I suppose in this particular example, I would buy this plant based on the flower.

    Did I confuse you, yet?

Oh, I like this old poll!

I buy orchids for many reasons and some I buy for foliage. I have a Jewel orchid I love, for instance. I bought a variegated paph too. I'll be looking at them all year with only a few weeks at best with flowers, interesting leaves are nice. I also buy for flowers and ease of care and because its cheap! lol

No need for apology, Matt. A poll like this one doesn't really have an "expiration" date with regards to interest/applicability unlike a year old flower picture post. As new folks join, their data input still has interest value. Then too, especially for new members, such a poll may inspire them to ponder a different standard of "beauty".

Not at all. So even in what amounts to a selfing, if I am following your explanation, one may get progeny whose flowers only have one spur or two, yes? Now, OoC, is it possible for a plant to be regularly erratic with regards to spur number? (Ie. regularly have some of its flowers 3-spurred, & some 1 or 2-spurred in a blooming cycle?)

I like blooms too but a nice bloom with interestingly marked foliage is a bonus and another reason to buy!

I have a number that foliage figured prominently in my purchase decision. But it always helps if it has a nice flower too!

I first got into orchids by seeing a phalaenopsis at the grocery store. I never knew there were tolumnia, oncidium, etc. I love foliage because so far nothing reblooms for me It has now been over 24 hours since my last purchase...where is my credit card?

If I liked an orchid, I would buy it in spite of the folliage
