    Mabuhay!

    Hi folks! I hope everyone is in A-1 condition including their families, friends, pets and of course, plants. I purchased local orchids from sidewalk-vendors in a place called Baclaran. Yes, this may not be the best way to conserve local species because it encourages blah..blah..blah but i guess its better than seeing dead/not bought specimen in the garbage or in canals.

    Most of the local specimens i've forgotten the names

    These were some of the orchids that were potted before but now transferred to our "chico" and "malungay" trees for quite a time now. Sadly, due to typhoons that devastated the country i had to cut some of the broken branches, but i guess my garden seems to be "perkying" up a little bit. This is also the result of my neglect that's why i have tons to do in the weekends if i want my garden to thrive again.

    Just purchased 3 new cattlleya cuttings namely : LC trict or treat x H. sunset, Blc Keowee and...

    For the meantime, i would like to leave something for you folks :

    I'll keep you posted folks!

    Please share your thoughts.

    mojamoja,
    we are a regular of baclaran, not knowing that its a haven for orchids. When we
    learned about it, we had a shopping spree.

    anyways the 2nd pic looks like a liparis, there's 2 elder ladies that always
    sells them and says that they are dancing ladies, but theyre not. The 3rd pic
    looks like flickengeria, but not sure. The fourth is oberonia, fifth looks like
    dendrobium secundum. I got my Vanda lamellata there, not knowing anything about
    orchids then, it was sold to me as waling waling (v.sanderiana).

    Last time we went there, there was a fight in one of the stalls (the one leading to an alley),
    which ended up with one guy stabbing another. Since then we haven't ventured to that area of
    Baclaran.

    These days we get our orchid fix from the Lung Center.

    Awesome natural look, Mojacko. I really like the way you have incorporated the orchids into the landscaping. Filipinos are so artistic!

    Orchids will establish themselves better if you plant them on hardwood and/or rough bark trees. Malunggay isn't a very good medium since it is softwood and breaks down too easily. Chico appears to be okay although it is frequented by ants because of the fruit and sometimes can be a favorite host for wood/stem borers.

    Mabuhay!

    @delphiguy
    thanks for the names, I remember now. Wow, how I wish I have a talent like yours. And you're very lucky that you live near LCP. Well, for me, Baclaran is my lung centre and cartimar most of the time. I too were also
    duped by some vendors there back then and it still happens but very seldom. Hahahaha Thanks for the info.

    @cattan
    aww...you're too kind, thanks for the kind words. Actually, its part of my conservation technique instead of buying driftwood or a tree-fern bark i try to maximize the trees around my garden. I used to have lots of big trees back then but now i only have a few left and mostly young trees. And i've also noticed that its less maintenance when orchids are mounted on live trees. anyway..just my two cents.

    @bench72
    thanks for the kind words too. yes, i am all up for conservation that's why no matter how weird the local species looks like if its affordable i would definitely buy it. And somehow, the flowers no matter how minute it is or how weird looking the local orchid plant is ...it really fascinates me.

    look forward to seeing the other plants in bloom... soon please
    ---ahhhrgh...the pressure...hehehehe. I'm still keeping my fingers-crossed.

    @manilabynight
    thanks for the added info MBN. I'll keep that in mind.

    additional pics

    i hope that this orchid will really thrive here

    my nodosa....well....its a very thrifty orchid. hehehe

    I'll keep you posted guys.

    What an amazing yard you must have! I would love to sit in a hammock and stare at your lovely mounted orchids. I agree...you are very artistic with those mounted in trees. Very pretty!

    equates to about 1.5-2hrs of drive (depending on the traffic.) Btw, your from Cavite
