Cirrhopetalum Elizabeth Ann 'Buckleberry'

Hello all,
I don't do Bulbos and have no experience in this area (though I love their strange shapes) but I have Cirrhopetalum Elizabeth Ann 'Buckleberry' in bloom now (3 spikes).

I grow it inside my house in a basket with sphagnum moss. The plant is pretty large but bloomed this year for the first time ONLY on psbs that had outgrown the basket with only a few roots attached to the outside.

My questions are:
--have you noticed this on your plants?
--am I to understand that as for some Cats & Laelias only those psbs that are outside the basket will send forth a spike?
--if that is the case should I train the coming psbs to grow outside the basket as a kind of garland?

Wentworth, it might be that the growths inside the basket were just not mature enough to bloom yet, and the mature growths just happened to grow outside of it, on the perimeter. I don't think that being inside or outside the basket has much of a bearing on whether a particular growth will bloom, unless conditions inside the basket are being kept too wet because of the sphagnum.

I think it is because the plant is not being disturbed everytime it leaves the pot ,or basket . I have 3 Bulbos. , they were little when I got them and in pots , no way would they stay in the pots . I moved them to baskets awhile back . Gin

Hi Wentworth,

I have a Sunipia bicolor (which used to be called a Bulbophyllum). Anyways, it pretty much rambles all over this square plastic pot that I have and I like things neat and tidy so I always train the p/b back into the pot... anyways, just noticed this week that it is sending out an inflorescence and it is on a p/b that is on the edge of the pot.. but all it's roots are still in the sphagnum moss. So I guess it must be a maturity thing and a bit of a condition thing... the edge of the pot would dry out much faster than the middle as there are holes on the side of the pot.

good luck with the bulbos, I am getting into them lately and want more and more and more....
