Went to a fair where they were offering this Cymbidium Golden Elf... so guess who got one?!! OK, will expose it to plenty of sun and water. Yew, does it need filtered strong sun or direct sun??? Thanks and regards!

It was in full sun for most of the year but as you know now we are having a real hot dry spell and I have just recently provided it filtered sun from 50% shade cloth, actually more for my semi-terete vandas, with which it shares the same growing bench. I am sure it suffered less from the full sun than the vandas.

Yew, thanks for the tip regarding sun exposure! One more thing, what is the best potting medium for these Cymbidiums? The pot they are in seems rather crowded...
have you any experience with dividing these? (some orchids like to be crowded, others
thrive/multiply if you give them ample space). Thank you again and best regards.

@Michael: I put broken bricks, charcoal and styrofoam mix inthe bottom 1/3 of the pot and smaller pieces of charcoal and a commercial cactus soil mix to fill up the remainder of the pot. I have only repotted it once, by taking out the whole colony, including the soil and transferred it to a bigger pot, with about an inch of space all round. It's now 2 years and time to divide the p-bulbs.I have been advised not to overpot, by using a pot just big enough so there is about an inch away from the mass of roots. I don't know if my rambling explanation will help.

I agree, this is a warm tolerance one, as well as being smaller than standard cymbidiums.
I also recommend crosses with Cym. sinense too (or just growing the species)
I have a Maureen Carter and a collection of ensifolium
Sinense has less warm tolerance than ensifolium but is still pretty forgiving. I have some Nut which is sinense x Red Beauty and it's pretty warm tolerant. Also I have the yellow Maureen Carter and it has a lovely scent.
Which ensifolium varieties do you have? I've just started collecting them and now have several.
Lately I've been growing a lot of Valerie Absolonova which is Peter Pan x Golden Elf- both are ensifolium offspring. Here in Hawaii it blooms all year long. I have about 60 of them and there are always 8-10 of them in bloom. Most of them bloom 2-4 times a year.
