Smile Damselflies and Dragonflies in my backyard

Every year I see amazing pictures that everyone submits of dragonflies and i've always been amazed you could get those pics. It's the time of year they appear here enmasse so I went outside to see if I could catch a couple pics. I snapped about 20 pics and came up with 3 decent pics. It's amazing the detail and fineness of these lovely creatures wings.

Good shots Connie. Always amazed to see how similar our butterflies and now the dragonflies look even separated by thousand of miles across the seas and continents.

Good shots Connie. I like the one with the striped wings, his head seems a bit too large for his body. Dragonflies quite often like to hunt from a particular perch. A good way of photographing them is to set up a perch, in a likely place, and wait with your camera on a tripod ready focused. That way you don't have to make large movements that startle them. This is a Blue-tailed Damselfly.

Excellant shot, Steve! Never thought of "staking out" a favored perch for them. I'll have to remember that.

They do like making you work for the pic, don't they Connie? LOL! Nice captures.

Wow, great detail on your picture! I like the blue on it's tail and the color to it's eyes. I'm going back out tomorrow to catch a few more shots. When I was watering the dendrobiums on the side of the house, there was a nice blue...but I didn't have the camera with me. It sat there so nice and still too...lol...maybe next time.
