another lovely bloom...
really cool!
are those related to habenaria?
Ron you really jogged my memory! I was looking at Brett's sussanae and wondering where I had seen them before until you mentioned Habenaria. Yes it was classified as Habenaria but has now been reclassified as Pectellis.
They are really beautiful and sooo... fragrant. You will smell them before you see them. I remember stumbling ( more like being led by the nose )upon a colony of them about 40 years ago, 50 metres from a country road. There were scores of them growing in an open secondary jungle, The plants were quite tall about 3 feet high. I collected 5 or 6 for myself and an uncle.Yes I admit I was guilty of collecting wild plants... but this was before CITES etc. Moreover there is a sad ending to this - my wife threw away the soil with the dormant bulb after it had died down upon flowering, unaware that she had thrown away the sussanae. Worse was to come. Ten years after the event I went to the same place again ...and no more secondary jungle and no more sussanae ; a new settlement had sprung up with cultivated plots all round.
hi yew, thats awesome finding orchids led by their fragrance, happened to me with a vanilla.
well, sad outcome of your story and the new settlement is truly a bummer!!!
imagine you would go from house to house there and ask the owners: do you actually know on what grounds your house is standing? how dare you...blablabla.... lol
