    Default Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim

I got a few cuttings of these last year (12"), at first I was having difficulty with
this as it seems that it cant get enough water. So I potted it with coco chips
and charcoal, and still leaves are getting wrinkly.... so i made some research
and found out that the parents for this hybrid are swamp dwelling, so i though
maybe i should put it in a water tray, and since then i took off. Grows like
weed and its now about 4ft tall. Cant wait for my teres to bloom as well, its
growing in the same pot as this is.

Very nice Miss Joaquim, Randy. Glad you're successful with it. You are correct about one of the parents hookeriana being a swamp plant. How's your teres? I understand it needs cooler conditions than Miss Joaquim.

I noticed that too Ron, during the summer it grew like weed... id say about a few
centimeters a month... now that that its raining and the sky is gloomy it seems to have
    slowed in growth as well.

I think I have mentioned this before. Miss Joaquim likes to clear the top of the support before it blooms, so a stake or support of 3-4 feet would be adequate. it loves full sun and the lath house isn't ideal for it. In the 40s-50s Miss Joaquim was one of the most common garden plant in the then Malaya( now Malaysia ) and Singapore; so much so that Miss Joaquim was synonymous with orchid. By the way the var Douglas is larger and darker than the normal Miss Joaquim but less free flowering.

Thanks Amy and Cin.... once this gets unmanageably tall, im going to do cuttings and
mount in the same pot/pvc so that it'll form a huge clump overtime.
