As far as I'm concern mariae always giving many flowers from different spikes at one time, I have bastiani but never blooms cant compare between this 2, I think might be mariae rather than bastianii Roy.

Bought at a show on Sunday. Couldn't refuse it at the price. I've repotted it with fresh mix into the same pot. 175mm pot ( 7 inch ) Cost $15.00

Looks like bastianii to me. Well grown plant Roy.
Zain & Yew, a member in another forum suggested bastianii even though I only had mariae in the title. Since Olaf Gruss was involved with the separation of bastianii from mariae I have sent him some pics.
The flowering and plant are great BUT the roots are extremely poor. Enough to say it had some but thats all. Should take off now.
My understanding is the bastiani has upright spikes and mariae has pendulous spikes. Based on this I would say bastiani.

- I completely agree with Orchidlady.
- According to Eric A. Christenson in his book "Phalaenopsis - A Monograph", he said « They are easy to distinguish in cultivation by their flowers (the segments flat in P. bastianini , with strongly recurved margins, generally, in P. mariae and the nature of the inflorescences, which are erect in P. bastianii, remarkably pendent in P. mariae. »
P. mariae
P. bastianii
- Do you see the difference ?
- Cheers
congrats roy and thanks for info daniel!
Photos sent to Mr Olaf Gruss who was instrumental in separating this plant away from Phal mariae, were confirmed today by e-mail from Olaf that this is Phal bastianii.
A pic looking down on the plant.
Thank you all for your imput on getting a correct name.
I love how everyone here works together to get the identifications so quickly. Lovely plant and blooms Roy. Congratulations.
