Not something unusual, but an unusual use. I was looking for a new way to grow Brassavola species when I built the greenhouse and was experimanting with mounting. They had never really done well in pots in over a half-dizen different medias. I wanted somthing whcih would hold a little water for a little while but basically be dry most of the time. I was sitting on the porch petting the dogs and my eye fell on a broken 16" clay pot I had used for a decorative tropical houseplant. I had filled it with other broked clay pots, thinking to use them for drainage. Suddenly I got an idea. I mounted the brassavolas on 1/4 to 1/3 size pices from 4, 5, and 6-inch pots with wire, no moss or other medium, and hung them up with wires for good light. They are misted almost daily, and have done much better than ever before.

I am really thinking about that broken clay pot idea. That sounds really cool, even for very small plants - and the clay will allow the roots to hold fast too.

Ha! Tenman...I made this thread and didn't even think about posting that particular use for clay pot pieces. And I just posted another thread a day or two ago about a keiki I had put on a pot shard. You've one-upped me! Glad some people are getting ideas about things here. Recycling is so great...I don't throw anything away anymore. I just brought home two five gallon pickle buckets from work and am going to make a makeshift humidifier for my little grow space.

I found a nice looking clay urn/vase that is rather deep. After drilling a hole in the bottom for drainage, I filled it half way with plastic grocery bags before adding the bark mix. Drains very well, and plants in this setup grow nicely.

I like the clay shard idea. I have some clay pots that I don't use for anything, I may just have to try it. I was going to "paint" some moss on them, but now there is another use!

Those horribly annoying plastic coated wires that they use to hold toys in the display boxes, you know the ones that they put 20 of on a $3.00 toy!!! Well, they are great for securing a spike to a stake.

For a while now, I have been using small white rocks in place of bark mix for my odcdm. and bllra. These are working VERY WELL! Betty :-)
