Roy, yours Aerides maculosum is great. I'm still waiting for flowers on my plant, maybe next year.

Roy can we have a close look at your A. maculosa, this isn't the correct time for it to bloom, I know you are in the southern hemisphere so different seasons, but it still sounds weird.

I'll take a pic of the plant and post it with a close up of the flower. Many think its Aer. rosea or multiflora but its not as far as I know, plants are greatly different. My rosea is about 2 weeks +/- from floweing which is earlier than last year.

Had some info come in about the Aer. maculosa. I've never bothered to research it as it came from a species only grower years ago whom I trusted. Well, it looks as if we may both have a hybrid as suggested elsewhere. On checking, my plant is nothing like Aer. maculosa. Its 20 times the size. It has been suggested that its a hybrid between Aer multiflora + rosea which would equal Aer. Hybridum. I can't find a pic of this to compare but the flowering times of the parents agree. I have one out now and the other not far away.

Amey, I'll still get a pic of the plant but I think your suspicions were correct.

Oh well, they are indeed very confusing, but the large plant size, the long inflorescence and the flowering time are more closely associated with A. rosea, perhaps you are correct it is a hybrid.

Amey, I contacted the seller and told him of the discussion. He said he imported 200 plants from a contact in India. They all came labelled Aer. crispum. I don't think they were big plants either. Mine was small. According to the pics sent from India the spikes were long like this one and branched. Mine did for 3 years but not this year. He did suggest it cound be a variety of maculosa called schroedereae. I cannot find any reference to this.

Roy, it's great that you can grow and flower these aerides in Victoria, do you provide them with extra heat in winter or do they grow along your other orchids without additional heat?

EMos, all my plants grow in the one house now, Paphs, Phrags, Vanda, Ascda etc plus a few Phalls, the Aerides and lots of other tropical stuff. The house has a temp range between ( ave lowest ) 12c and 35c. It was 40c in there the other day but the humidity was so high nothing was damaged. To be honest, everything loves the house except many of the Paphs which it was built for. It is heated and cooled as required.
