per Orchidwiz, this genus is alternatively known as Jackfowlieara. That guy - Jack Fowlie -certainly deserves the distinction of a genus named after him, but how there can be two alternative names I don't know. Yet another example of the chaos caused by the dna guys I suppose.
It is really a combination of all the usual suspects in Cattleyas - Cattleya itself, Laelia, Guaranthe, Rhyncolaelia - all of which could once have made up a BrassoCattleya.... plus a new genus for the combination - Diacrium- now known as Caularthron, I believe. I vaguely remember this is one with big spindle shaped bulbs, often hollow and friendly to ants - I know that is Schombocattleya, but I think Diacrium too ?
This specific hybrid - Appleblossom is a lovely plant; I had the usual; ( appleblossom coloured, i.e. white and pink) version in my last collection of cattleyas which was lost a few years ago. I had never seen our heard of a yellow one. But I spotted this and bought it without question, when I went to Paris last week for the EOC. Since then I checked it out, and yes there are several yellow ones named and awarded, although all much paler than here.
Four flowering bulbs, in a 12cm pot solid with roots ; repotting it when new growths appear will be a challenge. Perhaps I will cut the ;pot off , and gently swill the old compost away.
The flowers are bit smaller than the pink Appleblossoms I knew, but that maybe culture. We shall see, if and when I flower it on my own efforts.
Fabulous!
Wow, a pentageneric hybrid!
Beautiful color Geoff!
Love to get my hands on this one! Beautiful!
Geoff,
I have that plant and it is currently just starting to set bud.
Hopefully I'll get to see it before the iguana's strike.
Awesome...Geoff.
What a stunning orchid! WOW!
cheers,
