Exclamation UPDATE :: 7 Months period after repotting Phals into perlite and lava rock medium.

    Hello all,

I would like to wish everyone a Happy new year, hopefully 2011 will be full of blooms for us all.

On June 6th, 2010, I started a New thread http://www.rv-orchidworks.com/orchid...ro-medium.html, after all the helpful responses I got from the members here, and due to the limited specialized orchid supplies in my country, I decided to venture with my experiment and was hopeful that I will likely receive a good outcome.

On June 12th, 2010; the Phals were repotted into a 100% perlite and lava rock. They were placed outside all summer long but did not get any direct sunlight. They received plenty or indirect light, and cool wind all day long. I didn't use any fertilizer because I couldn't find an orchid specific one. The water that was used was filtered water.

Here are the pictures on the day of the repotting on June 12th, 2010:

About 2 -3 weeks passed before anything happened and then new roots started to appear, then after about 3 months new leaves started to form.
final result, was a success, 2 new leaves and more than 10 new roots per Phal, some of the roots are approx. 20 cm long as you will see in the pics below. Mid-October, the Phals started growing new spikes and I moved them inside every since. I maintain a once a week watering regimen where Flush the medium with about 2 liters of filtered water and then let the pots drain.

Any tips in addition to what I'm doing? and thank you in advance.

Nice job! I hope your containers have drainage holes to get rid of excess water and to allow air to reach the roots. If you can't find an orchid specific fertilizer I would try to find something balanced, like a 10-10-10 with all the minor elements. Good luck!

Your phalaenopsis orchids can not live without some nutrients. This just proves how very adaptable they are and how much of their 'food' comes from the air and water (you said filtered and not distilled water). Great job! AL

I remember this Johhny ! Good to see that the Phals are thriving. But I have to point out , that though they are growing in your set up, they are actually not loving it. If you observe all the new healthy roots are growing from the pot, outside into the air, rather than going deep into the pot. This is their way of telling, that its too moist and suffocating in their. Just reduce the amount of perlite and increase the lava rock and they will love it with more air movement and less moisture, just my thoughts.

I have to agree here. Do the pots drain about half-way down to allow air to reach the roots? Glad you are seeing spikes and leaves too. Thanks for sharing the results of you tests with us. I look forward to future updates.

    Cheers,

Madphrag, thank you. When I repotted my phals I followed the instruction posted on this forum, and therefore the pots have 10 holes 2 cm above the bottom, the holes were punctured by a small screw driver. As for the fertilizer, I am only able to find agricultural grade products, and I am afraid that that will kill my Phals.

Orchidsal, Yes Filtered Water, we have a filtering apparatus at home for drinking water and I only water my Phals with that water.
