Wow...!!! Excelent post...I have all those things in my kitchen...(just kidding)...Thank you for this info.
ok, there´s a cheap recipe which works well although sounding so simple ...
1.5 Liter rain-water
3oo ml potatojuice
12 drops of lemon
3o g sugar
1 little spoon Pepton
1 teaspoon orchid-fertilizer NPK 8/5/5
1o g charcoal
Agar-Agar 10g - 15g (depending on the source you have)
well well, thanks for the info. always interested to try out new media recipe. my initial plan was to order the P668 media (i just pollinated some catasetums). i guess will try some with your formula as well. and i like the part of the 12drops lemon juice because i always had an issue with adjusting the pH as i do not have a pH meter.
bye the way is there a substitute for Pepton? Not sure where can i get it here in my area.
thanks you so much for sharing the info. best regards
Interesting formula! Just a few questions:
-How do you make 300 ml potatojuice?
-How many grams is a "little spoon"
- How many grams is a "teaspoon"
-Which species have you grown on this formula?
Thanks for the simple formula, that anyone can make. Hope you will answer my questions, I want to try anything and compare with the commercially available mediums.

Ian...I can't even find any Agar let alone Pepton. I live in Northern Thailand and have asked everyone I can think of. Even at Doi Tung, The Kings Mother's Estate where they have a good sized lab. You think it was some top secret substance or something...LOL I'll keep looking, but I may just keep the lab busy with my pods. I have nine now that need to be done. Mostly Phals and a couple Changs. Be well.
No Azomite here in Thailand, along with many other chemicals...Lots of things we don't have here or are 800 miles away...
Interesting thread!!! I have tried flasking myself and I did get germination and have gone on to my first replate with cymbidium seeds from green pod. I used P6668. I use the same medium for my sowing and replates but use different formulas. For sowing it is 13.5 g P6668+5g sugar+7.5g agar. For my replates I use 20g P6668+5g sugar+25g mashed banana+7.5g agar. I pollinated in early February of 2012 and sowed them on August 2012. I replated once since then about two months back and the largest seedling is about 1.5 cm tall. I am so excited!!!
P.S: I didn't have to adjust the pH as it was within the acceptable range. I used narrow range pH strips to determine the pH. Also remember to test the pH while the solution is cool. Do not add the agar while boiling.
thanks for the info, i assume your formula is for one liter preparation?
my p668 just arrived two weeks ago, there is not sugar in the preparation that i got. so should i add the 5 gram sugar? however the preparation contains 8gm gelling agent but the p668 is 24gm for one liter preparation
