How about a bag of orchid mix?

My dendrobium s are happily growing in standard orchid mix...the same one I use for Cattleyas. I repotted them this summer, based on Bruce's advice that they should 1) be in smaller pots, and 2) that from the photo I posted the old media looked "broken down" i.e, no longer in firm discernible chunks. When it breaks down, the chunks get sorta crumbly and as they break down into smaller particles, they keep air from getting to the roots.

I agree with Kathi about not repotting ur orchid at this time. They do much better being pot bound. When you do repot i always go one size up. Any pot will do--plastic or clay as long as there is a drainage hole in the bottom. With clay pots make sure that they are not glazed on the inside. As far as your fern question it appears to me that it is not getting enough humidity. Most ferns require high humidity to preform well inside. I set my potted ferns in saucers filled with pebbles and water. That seems to help keep them from the drying of the leaf tips. They also can turn brown and dry if they get too much sun--even indoors and yes even during the winter. Check and see if any direct late morning or afternoon sun is hitting the plant.
