    Default Dendrobium Dawn Maree

This is another clone of my Den Dawn Maree. This clone has slightly larger flowers about 2.5 inches across.Like other dendrobes of the Formosae section the spike is very short with 3 -5 flowers per spike but very well arranged and displayed on the plant. The flowers have very good, thick substance. Blooming seems to take place all at once or a few days apart even from old pseudobulbs. Unfortunately, yellow beetles destroyed about 40% of the buds before I caught and destroyed them or there would have been more flowers.

It has quite a pleasant, subtle fragrance at night.

Do you use insecticide to kill this critters? I love it a couple of years ago I kept looking this magnificent hybrids, I bought from different vendor unfortunately all sent to heaven due to inexperience maybe not suitable to grow here. I also try one of their parents ( Den cruentum) but unsuccessful maybe no luck.

There is no insecticide to control the yellow beetles. I pick them by hand and then break off their heads (quick and humane and also very satisfying). However this is no easy task as these blighters drop down like a stone to the ground and it is almost impossible to find them when they reach the ground. The trick is to use one hand to touch it while positioning your other hand cupped below the flower to receive it as it drops and then.......decapitation. Of course I have to make several trips to the orchid house to look for them, usually in the mornings and evenings.

Recently in my posts I complained about the infestation of thrips. Halloamey (Amey Bhide) recommended Confidor but I found that it is very expensive and comes only in commercial packs @MYR 350 (US $ 100) a litre. The man at the agri shop suggested a cheaper substitute Palisade 18.2SL which comes in 250 ml bottles. Imagine how long this will last me with a dilution of 2.5 ml to 10 litres of water. And thanks to Amey no more shrivelled buds, dried-up spikes, blasted buds and deformed flowers and this after 2 sprayings, 1 week apart. This is a systemic insecticide and works on all sucking insects. The active ingredient here is imidacloprid.

This dendrobe really thrives here in the north and Den cruentum seems to bloom throughout the year. Dawn Maree and cruentum flowers are very long lasting, unless (esp Dawn Maree ) it is pollinaed by some nocturnal insect. You should try again, Zainal.
