Stop! Yer killin me here!you should be Paphragal.
About Whippoorwil though, Tom Larkin's an AOS judge and he's been growing for over 50 years. He started the OSO (our local society) and he's actually a pretty awesome guy. If *anyone* knows orchids, he does. He's been a great mentor....
Well, Pete, I must say I have always thought that your name was one of the more clever ones out there, but I wouldn't want to steal your thunder...nor would I wish to lead people to believe we were in cahoots to convert the world to paph and phrag heads! (mhwa ha! ha! ha!)
L - I did go read the bio, and checked out all the different areas. Seem like quite the involved growers for sure. Now shush!
I don't grow Cypripediums or I would have named myself Cypaphraguy.
Oh boy! I need to get out more.
They had cyps for sale where I went last weekend - to view them in situ - but selling in pots. Little yellow cuties - little curly petals like Phrags. Sigh. I knew my woods would kill them. We are told at a young age in Massachusetts that Ladyslippers are endagered and WILL die in our possession. DO NOT PICK (when a child) or BUY or TRANSPLANT (as an adult.) It is ingrained early on - hence my inital fear of paphs!
Otherwise I could have been Cypgal.
Yes, Cyps are endangered and it is illegal to dig them up. I love them but I would rather just look at them in the woods. You can buy them from reputable vendors.
There was one person I showed my exotic slippers to and she was just amazed. She had never seen one before and she said they were beautiful and majestic looking and they deserved to be called Emperor's slippers instead of ladyslippers.
Garden in the woods is the home of the New England Wildflower Society - so they've been growing and selling them legally for a few years. They sell the less "common" cyps at reasonable prices. But I agree, it is ingrained in me to love them in their natural habitat. Particularly cyp. acaule, the classic pink. I have one trail in back of my house which has a bunch of them, under hemlocks. But it has been so buggy I would have to run to them, then back and forth very fast to catch a glimpse w/out getting eaten alive by mosquitoes. Maybe it will dry out by Monday so I can run out there.
Do post some pics of the native slippers.
