    Default Louisiana Jungle

This past Sunday I went on a little kayak trip in the swamp. I recently learned that there are a few genera of orchids that live in Louisiana! So I went hoping to find Epidendrum magnoliae. Unfortunately this orchid is proving to be very elusive and I was unsuccessful. But I thought I would share some photos from the trip with everyone.

Interesting pics, Shane. Is that a bayou and are those trees' cypresses? Always wonder how those trees survive with the root system under water all the time.

Not so much a considered a bayou, this is Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge. A bayou usually holds water permenatly. This place floods half of the year because of all the snow from up north gets carried down the Mississippi and the surrounding rivers. Yes these are mostly bald cypress and a few red cypress. Cat Island currently has the largest cypress tree in the country. I'll try to get some pics of it up later.

@Bruce thanks, my father let me use his SLR camera.

@Zain No caymans, but american alligators. They get to be abt the same size maybe bigger, but not as big as a crocodile.

Nice pics, Shane. Louisiana is a wonderful state IMO, my family is from BR. Which swamp were you in? E. mag has very dark green leaves that stand out from the fern and moss, but only in large clumps. Isn't it cool to have and epiphitic orchid where you live?!! Hope you find it!
