    Default 'Blue'? Vascostylis in Bloom

This is another of my mini vandaceous hybrids in bloom. This cross is Vasco Tham Yuen Hae x Vasco Broga Bluebells and the flowers are slightly over an inch (3 cm).

The colour is extremely difficult to capture on digital camera, the ultra violet end of the colour spectrum being especially difficult. I have a feeling (very unscientific, of course) that there is an inherent built-in tendency to overcorrect this end of the spectrum - just as we used to correct the blue cast on colour film by fixing on almost permanently a UV/Skylight/Warm-up filter on our lens. I tried tweaking the White Balance, the Colour Temperature on my Nikon D200 but could still not get the 'correct' colour. I tried on-camera flash, off-camera flash - all to no avail.

I attribute all this to the fact that the colour of these blooms is weird - the back of the flower is blue, the front is basically brown overlaid with a blue cast, that alternately looks dark blue; almost black; slate brown depending on the ambient light and the angle of the light. When photographed with flash it looks brown and the blue overlay disappears.

The last picture is about as near to the 'original' colour as perceived by the human eye (mine - hehehe) as I could manage (no flash). The other 2 were taken using flash (with Commander mode on camera flash and SB 600 off- camera).

Wow, Yew, these are so beautiful! Thank you for the explanation of the color - it helps me appreciate these beauties even more.
