Hubby is building my new orchid house at the moment. Need help guys.
To the right of picture is East, Left is facing west, while back is facing North. On roof of shadehouse is 75% shadecloth, and around sides will be 50%. But in your expert opinion, with our temps. being around 30 deg.C in summer), how far down the back and left side of the shade house should the 75% reach. The shadehouse measurements are 8 x 8 x 8 feet.
Sorry for the mess you see, but it is still in construction, with door to be fitted yet. I didn't know where to put this post, I hope it is in the right section of the forum.

I wish I could help Annette but your Brisbane weather seems to be much milder than what we have here. We normally use 50% shade for our mature plants and 75% for our seedlings and young plants. Most orchids can tolerate morning sun to 11 am and afternoon sun after 5 pm here, so the shade we provide will have to take that into consideration. I don't know if that helps. I'm sure some of our Aussie members will have better suggestions.

Thanks Yew Sung for your input. Yes, you really do have the extreme heat there. Thank you once again.

Rosie you should allign the greenhouse in the North south direction facing the east, it would also be good if there is some shade on the west side, this way the orchids get the morning to noon sun and not the afternoon evening sun. Rosie I have a very similar climate like yours and for my greenhouse I have a 90% shade cloth on the roof and a 75% shade cloth on the sides.
Have a look at the construction of my greenhouse

Amey, omg!!!! ouch, makes my orchid house pale in comparison. Thank you for the input on the location of my little "dog kennel" (Aussie humour). Your climate where you are is really in the extreme, isn't it. LOL

Yes, except for the two months of April and May (living hell 36 - 40 oC +) the climate is on an average similar to Brisbane, with mild winters and a lot of sun year round except for the monsoon days. Your shade house also seems to be on the terrace, so I would recommend going with a higher % shade cloth as there are no trees etc to create shade for the plants. I (also plants) really do not like the green shade cloth. Green spectrum of the light is what is liked by our eyes but not plants, they actually prefer the red and the blue spectrum for growth. That is why they look green (they absorb all other wavelengths from the white light and just reflect the green light).
