    Default vanda 'boonchoo'

ok, so this is one of my first vandas i have managed to not kill... i have previously admitted to having a watering problem...but irrigation system has made magic happen...my vandas lived, AND BLOOMED~
i picked this one up for just a few bucks a while back, i was surprised how fast it attached itself and put up a spike...im questioning the flowers tho...all of them seem to have some problems that clearly occurred during bud formation....could be any number of things but im wondering if this is a defect as all of the plants the grower was selling (for only 6$us) were rather large and had previously flowered...i was checking out his stand today and ones with flawless blooms were for sale for more than 3X that price...not sure, but im still tickled just to have flowers!!

Congratulations Shane. I still don't think of Vanda's as easy to bloom though I love them. I am also tickled pink when they bloom. Super rich colors on this one. AL

Very nice colours on this one. The 'defect' could be due to a number of reasons - genetics, virus, watering, fertiliser , sucking insects and mites. Looking at your pictures I noticed the dried tip of your spike and I suspect the most likely culprit is thrip. I had the same thing happen to my vandas and after treating with imidacloprid no more deformed flowers.

i was suspecting as much...though i did raise an eyebrow and my seller's bargain sale bin of mature plants while younger plants of the same crossing in their first flower were so much more....ill be sure to do some treatments next time...tho its hard to find the good chemicals here...they love shit made from chrysanthemum extract...that does NOTHING!!! i'll find some main-land chinese people, they still sell DDT and stuff :-)

Yes, I would think damage from an insect of some sort on this orchid.

    Cheers,
