Encyclia atropurpurea

Okay, in the last thread I started I said three photos turned out. This is the third photo. It is of an Encyclia. The spike is about 18 inches long and the flowers are only at the very end. It is a really interesting orchid. (No smell here either ), but it sure is pretty.

Hey, that's my favorite Encyclia species! Very nice blooms and picture. Are they fragrant? Mine hasn't bloom yet but it looks very close to maturity.

Pseudobulbs are really round on it too, not the usual teardrop shape. No fragrance that I can tell, though.

Very pretty - I have one that is a hybrid of Enc. Cordigiera (3/4) - Enc. 'Gay Rabbit'. It is BY FAR my slowest grower! poke poke poke! Supposed to be fragrant.

These typically have a fragrance during the AM hours...all traces of fragrance are gone from about 2PM onward. Mine smelled very strongly of rose mixed with cinnamon.

BTW, a minor niggle...these are known either as Epidendrum atropurpureum (for horticultural and/or hybridization purposes) or Encyclia cordigera (the presently accepted botanical name). There was already an Enc. atropururea when the plant was reassigned, so a new species epithet was assigned.

I wonder about this- first it was advertised as Epi. but most think it is Enc. So now there is contoversy over the actual name? What do we all think it is Ish this possibly Epi/Enc. Cordigiera?

Heather, I'm sure it's a typo but it's Encyclia cordigera and not Cordigiera (note the spelling and species are not capitalized).
